Apostasy

uh-POS-tuh-seenoun

The abandonment of the faith altogether — a falling away from Christianity, not merely an error within it.

Not To Be Confused With

Apostasy is leaving the faith entirely; heresy is corrupting it from within while still claiming the Christian name; schism is splitting from a communion while keeping the faith.

From Greek apostasia, “a standing away, defection.” Where heresy distorts the faith and schism divides the Church, apostasy renounces Christ outright — the deliberate forsaking of belief.
