Eisegesis

eye-suh-JEE-sisnoun

Reading one's own ideas INTO a text — the error of making a passage say what you already wanted it to say.

Not To Be Confused With

Eisegesis is the mistake; exegesis is the goal. Proof-texting is a common vehicle for eisegesis — quoting a verse out of context to support a view.

From eis- (“into”). Eisegesis imposes a meaning the author never intended — supplying the conclusion and hunting for verses to fit. It is one of the most common and least noticed errors in popular Bible use.
