Authority & Sources

Magisterium

maj-iss-TEER-ee-umnoun

The official teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church (the pope and bishops in communion with him). A Catholic concept.

Not To Be Confused With

Magisterium names a specifically Catholic teaching office. Orthodoxy locates authority in the consensus of the Church and councils; most Protestants in Scripture as the final norm.

From Latin magister, “teacher.” In Catholic theology the magisterium authoritatively interprets Scripture and tradition. The scope of that authority is a central point in the Scripture-and-tradition debate — presented on Theologos in each tradition's own voice.
