Penal Substitution

The view that Christ bore the penalty for sin in the sinner's place — taking the judgment we deserved so we could be acquitted.

Not To Be Confused With

Penal substitution is one theory of the atonement, emphasizing the law-court and God's justice; it complements rather than cancels Christus Victor and others. Critics fear caricature (an angry Father punishing an unwilling Son); defenders stress the willing Son and the triune purpose.

Rooted in Isaiah 53 (“the chastisement that brought us peace was upon him”) and Romans 3. Central to the Reformation and much evangelical theology, it pairs naturally with imputation and propitiation.
