Covenant Theology

A framework that reads the whole Bible through a series of divine covenants — classically the covenants of redemption, works, and grace — stressing the unity of God's one people.

Not To Be Confused With

Covenant theology stresses CONTINUITY (one people of God across both Testaments); dispensationalism stresses DISCONTINUITY (distinct eras, and often a distinction between Israel and the Church). New covenant theology sits between them.

Rooted in the Reformed tradition, covenant theology organizes redemptive history around berith — covenant. The eternal covenant of redemption (within the Trinity), a covenant of works with Adam, and the covenant of grace running from Abraham to Christ give Scripture one storyline and one covenant people, with baptism often seen as the new-covenant counterpart to circumcision.
