Memorialism

The view (associated with Zwingli and much of the free-church tradition) that the Lord's Supper is chiefly a memorial — “do this in remembrance of me” — without a change in the elements.

Not To Be Confused With

Memorialism denies a special presence IN the bread and wine, stressing remembrance and proclamation; the real-presence traditions hold Christ is truly received. Many memorialists still affirm Christ's presence among the gathered church, just not in the elements.

Anchored in “in remembrance of me” (1 Cor 11:24) and Jesus' bodily ascension. Critics say it underplays “this is my body” and the participation language of 1 Cor 10:16; defenders prize its clarity against superstition. Presented in its own voice alongside the others.
