Monergism

The view that regeneration is the work of God alone — one worker — the sinner being passive in the new birth.

Not To Be Confused With

Monergism (God alone acts in regeneration) is the Reformed position; synergism (God and the human will cooperate) is the Arminian/Catholic-leaning position. The dispute concerns the NEW BIRTH, not the whole Christian life, where all affirm cooperation.

From Greek monos (one) + ergon (work). The dead cannot raise themselves (Eph 2:1-5), so God alone gives new life; faith is then the fruit, not the cause, of regeneration. It pairs with irresistible grace and unconditional election.
